President/Vice President Candidates

The following are statements from the candidates for Student Body President/Vice President:

Justin Harken/Eric Benson

The basic premise of our platform is “Bringing the students back to Student Senate.”  Our agenda includes:

a. A monthly e-mail from Senate to the Student Body.

b. A State of the Wartburg Address, at the end of each term that explains what Senate has done for that term.

c. Two types of forums:
    1. The first type would be between Students and the Exec.
    2. The second type of forum will be a continuation of the forums started this between
        administration and students.

d. Make the administration more visible to the Student Body.

e. Reach out to active organizations to better reach students.

Scott Kempel/Katie Jo Kuhens

Platform: Review and possible revision of the Plan of Essential Education.

Other thoughts:  Kempel and Kuhens feel that students’ voices should and need to be listened to.  We have the wit and tenacity to give students that voice.  We are fun and motivated and intend to rub this off on the student body and of Senate as well.  The horse doesn’t move unless you get down and slap it on the butt sometimes.  In other words, the Administration doesn’t always listen and sometimes you need to push the envelope and step out of the box to motivate change.

Erin Moran/Erin Wright

We base our platform on one broad, simple formula: E ² = WC ³

The tree C's (connection, cooperation, and community, are intertwined within our vision for students and personnel at Wartburg.  Our formula means reinforcing ties between faculty, staff, students and administration through respect, honest, and clear communication.  Through this, we will strenghten our community and cooperation within it.  We will also help students get connected to and informed about national and international happenings.  We are passionate about improving several areas and have an innate ability to recognize all aspects of situations and solutions from many different angles.  We get things done.

Some of our ideas:

-Meetings led by Senators in Res. Halls

-Student Center calendar display of events

-Administrative Spotlight - showcasing who does what and how to contact them

-Senior Class Trip

-ETK events held off campus

-National and international news in the Trumpet

Eva Sersland/Jon Palmquist

We want to bring the ABC’s back to Wartburg: accountability, broad involvement, communication.

-Hold students and faculty accountable for being able to freely discuss their thoughts and opinions in the classroom.

-Bring leaders of campus organizations together to make events more successful.

-Student Senate should be more of a resource of ideas and support instead of just a source of funds.

-Continue the mission Waves of Love and UKnight have set by uniting campus around one cause for the year.

-Hold “round-table” discussions in residence halls each month.

-Improve the relationship between students and administration through active communication.

New Housing Criteria

New Housing Criteria:

1)Applications for approval to live off-campus will only be accepted from students who will be seniors next year, unless the student fits into one of the "automatic" categories. To apply a "Non-automatic category" student will have to earned 22 credits at the conclusion of this past Fall or be excepted to graduate in May of 2007.

2) Any student applying for off-campus approval will be expected to have a 2.25 cumulative grade point average.

3) Groups of students applying for off-campus approval may be no larger than two.

4) Student receiving a scholarship that requires on-campus living will not be permitted to apply for off-campus living. Residing off-campus may have financial aid implications.

5) Changes to the "automatically" released category:

*The non-traditional student age has been lowered from 24-23.

*Student indicating they will be commuting from homecan do so only if they are commuting from within a 40 mile radius of Wartburg. These students must be commutingfrom the home of a parent or guardian and the home must be owned by the parent or guardian.

*Students stating they will be married will be asked to provide a copy of their marriage announcement or license.

Other talking points:

*Should students released to off-campus be required to participate in some board plan option as a means of ensuring continued community involvement. In creating the off-campus wait list should extra "points" be given to a student who subscribes to a meal plan option?

*As part of a strategy to recruit more transfer students who have completed an AA degree elsewhere and have already lived off campus, it has been suggested that these students be permitted to live off campus if they choose.

If you have concerns, questions, or suggestions email the Senate at senate@wartburg.edu
